Cost analysis

AI without structure costs more than you think.

Most teams pay for AI three times over: wasted tokens, endless retries, and the hours spent cleaning up output that was never reliable. Here is the difference structure makes, with every number in your hands, not mine.

Cost 01

Wasted tokens

An unconstrained model wanders. It re-reads context it does not need, pads its output, and takes several attempts to land on something usable. Every detour is billed. A tightly scoped kit holds the model to the task, so it spends tokens on the answer instead of the search for it.

Cost 02

Rework loops

Unreliable output does not fail cleanly. It looks right, ships, and breaks later, which sends you back into the loop: re-prompt, re-run, re-check. Each pass costs more spend and more attention. Structure raises the odds that the first output is the one you keep.

Cost 03

Cleanup labor

This is the cost nobody puts on the invoice, and it is usually the largest. Someone has to read what the AI produced, find what is wrong, and fix it. Engineer hours dwarf token costs. Constrained generation plus hand validation means far less to clean up.

Structure attacks all three. The model below puts numbers to it. The defaults are reasonable starting points, not claims about your setup. Change every one of them until it matches your reality.

Your assumptions

20
Features, automations, or jobs you build with AI each month.
$6
Rough token spend for one task when the model runs unconstrained, retries included.
45%
Share of those tokens the constrained version spends. Lower means bigger savings. This is the number people argue about, so set it where you believe it lands.
1.5
Engineer time spent fixing and reworking unreliable output.
0.4
Engineer time when output is constrained and validated by hand.
$75
What an hour of that engineering time costs you.

Read this before you quote the number.

This is a model, not a quote. Notice that the biggest lever is engineer time, not the API bill, which is exactly why token-only comparisons understate the real cost of unstructured AI. If you want figures grounded in your actual workflow instead of assumptions, that is what an audit produces.
